Death Penalty "script" Exercise#7
Death Penalty
Definition: Capital punishment, or the death
penalty, is the killing of a person as a punishment for some offensive act also
known as capital offenses or capital crimes.
Methods:
·
The Lethal
injection is the practice of injecting a combination of poisons into a person
with a fatal dose of drugs causing immediate death.
·
2nd supplying High Bolt Electric Shock by
making the person seated in the electric chair
·
Hanging the person to death
·
Suffocating him to death using a deadly gas. A gas
chamber is an apparatus for
killing humans with gas,
consisting of a sealed chamber into which a poisonous or asphyxiant gas is introduced. The most commonly used
poisonous agent is hydrogen cyanide; carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide have
also been used.
·
Firing squad is made
up of three to six shooters per prisoner who stand or kneel opposite the
condemned who is usually tied to a chair or to a stake. Normally the shooters
aim at the chest, since this is easier to hit than the head, causing rupture of
the heart, great vessels, and lungs so that the condemned person dies on the
spot.
Countries with Death Penalties:
· China: has more executions than rest of the
world put together.
· United States:
· Saudi Arabia: Executions are often carried out by
public beheading.
· Iran: Second-Highest level of execution
worldwide in 2014, most were drug related crimes.
· Iraq: executions almost doubled from 2012,
because of wars and terrorism
· Afghanistan: Death penalty imposed after “confessions”
allegedly extracted under torture.
Pros and Cons Of death Penalty
Pros:
1.
If a criminal is jailed, he may again commit the same
crime after being released from prison. Giving him death penalty would make
sure that the society is safe from being attacked by criminals. It seems to be
appropriate punishment for serial killers and for those who continue to commit
crimes even after they had served their imprisonment.
2.
Overcrowding in jails has become a big problem
recently. Criminals whose crimes are considered to be of low danger are having
their sentences shortened to deal with jail overcrowding. By making the death
penalty procedure faster you can help this problem of jail overcrowding.
3.
. Death penalty is still cheaper compared to the costs
of life without parole. Although there is no contention that the cost of the
former is high, life imprisonment is accumulatively higher given the expenses
for food, health care and other costs.
Cons:
1.
More often poor people are executed over rich people
because they cannot afford lawyers
2.
The death penalty gives closure to victim’s families
who have suffered so much. Some family members of crime victims may take years
or decades to recover from the shock and loss of a loved ones. Life in prison
just means the criminal is still around to haunt the victim. A death sentence
brings finality to a horrible chapter in the lives of these family members.
3.
Capital punishment does not seem to be the solution.
This is because death penalty does not guarantee the end of crime. It is only
education that can bring a stay on the increasing number of crimes. Also there
is every possibility that the end of one criminal may give birth to a hundred
offenders. Capital punishments may minimize crimes but in the reality it is
only suppressing them, and what is suppressed always results in an outburst.
Facts And
Figures:
1. In 2015, 139
Countries around the world abolished death penalty they think its cruel and
unusual punishment. 11 countries of them abolished death penalty except wartime
crimes or for terrorist attacks.
Conclusion:
In my opinion, I’m in favor of the death penalty, because we can save
innocent lives. Today, there are many pros and cons to this death penalty
issues. However, if people weigh the arguments properly, and have empathy for
the victims, they will be more inclines to favor death penalty. As a matter of
fact, most people in the world today are in favor of it. The death penalty can
help to lower future murderers, thus, we can save more lives in every minute.
